Mars plays a primary role in our relationships. Individually by sign, house and aspects in our natal chart Mars represents our life force, our will and drive and our desire nature – including our sexual desire! If our Mars is repressed, suppressed or unconscious, we are likely to respond to others in either a passive or aggressive manner. Figuring out who and what we are attracted to may prove very challenging and ultimately our survival instinct, which fuels our will to live, may feel unreachable.
Although our natal Mars doesn’t change its essential nature, as transiting Mars journeys through the 12 signs of the zodiac, our focus is collectively drawn to taking action on whatever is important for the sign Mars is moving through, in the manner of that sign. With Mars travelling through Cancer, our focus is drawn to the arena of family and loved ones, as well as maintaining the ‘familiar’, protecting our homes and country, placing safety before adventure, revisiting the past and finding comfort in traditional rituals. Money also becomes more important for Mars in Cancer as it is seen as a means of safety and protection.
This can affect our relationships on two levels. The first is the explicit level in our relationships in that we are unlikely to want to take risks that might upset the status quo whilst Mars is in Cancer. Our relationships may also be affected by other family members – taking care of parents, children…However, there is a further level which is equally important. This is the impingement of the collective shifts that are occurring with Mars changing signs, on us as individuals and on our relationships. For example – with Mars in Cancer there is likely to be a stronger drive towards protectionism and nationalism on a global scale. Depending on our individual chart as well as our synastry and composite charts – this may feel comfortable or not and may impinge to a greater or lesser degree on our relationships!
A useful question to ask at this time might be: are the stresses in our relationship internal or external? If they are predominantly external, how can we work with the Mars in Cancer energies to protect our relationship during this time without changing our essential nature?
Keeping in mind that Cancer is a very indirect and sensitive emotionally based energy, kindness and tenderness are likely to generate a greater response in relationships over the next four weeks than forceful demands.
